In its most basic form, generative AI is an algorithm that specifies how a nonplayer character will act. A simple example is a chasing algorithm, which instructs the NPC to move toward a target point by advancing along the x and y coordinate axes until it meets the specified goal.

More complex generative AI algorithms can also create nondeterministic behavior for NPCs in games. These systems can learn from the actions of players, or even other NPCs, to predict how they will react. This can help create NPCs that are more believable, but it can also make the NPCs seem less predictable and harder to control.

Other generative AI tools can also automate design processes, allowing designers to create more content in a shorter amount of time. This is a major benefit for game makers as the cost of creating games continues to rise.

Several games are already taking advantage of generative AI. Project M, an upcoming title from NCSoft, uses generative AI to create NPCs, while NetEase’s Justice Online is slated to feature the technology in its upcoming Alice in Wonderland-themed MMO. Other games using generative AI include Bradley, an art-focused puzzle game, and Learn(), a game that puts the player in the role of a machine learning specialist through visual programming puzzles presented as freelance jobs, such as designing software for autonomous vehicles or surveying consumer tastes.
